Adobe Reader

s1a1Several of the pages on this site provide access to documents which are available as PDF files. To read these files you will need Adobe Reader installed on your PC.  If you do not have this available to you you can obtain it, free of charge, as a download from Adobe. This link will take you to the appropriate page on their website.

Searching the PDF Documents

Built into Adobe Reader is the ability to search the content of the document dispayed. There are two versions of Reader commonly in use, version 7 and 8. The search facility works slightly differently in each.

Reader Version 7

With the document open in the web page -

  • Right click anywhare in the document.
  • Select “Search” from the pop up menu. A new panel opens (usually to the right of the document)
  • Enter the word you wish to find in the document (it can be all or part of the word).

Adobe Reader then finds all of the occasions that the word you entered appears in the document and lists them for you.

  • Click on any entry in the list to be taken to the entry on the document.
Reader Version 8

With the document open in the web page -

  • Right click anywhare in the document.
  • Select “Search” from the pop up menu. A new panel opens which appears in a separate window and which may lie on top of the docuemnt you wish to search. If this is the case click on the word “Arrange Windows” at the top of the new Search panel and they will appear side by side.
  • Enter the word you wish to find in the document (it can be all or part of the word).

Adobe Reader then finds all of the occasions that the word you entered appears in the document and lists them for you.

  • Click on any entry in the list to be taken to the entry on the document.

In each version the result list shows the word you typed surrounded by a small extract from the document. Please be aware that this can therefore show some information from the line above or below that which relates to the entry you may wish to see.

Tip for Members

If you are a member of the Society and wish to search the Membership Listing for your interests, enter your membership number in the search facility but remember to tick the box “Whole words only” underneath. In this way, if you are member number 1 you will not get the interests for member no 10 or 11 or 101, etc shown.

Printing the PDF Documents

If you wish to print any of the PDF documents, such as the Membership Form -

  • Right click anywhere over the document you wish to print.
  • Select “Print” from the pop up menu. There are a number of options available when the Print facility opens and in most cases your can just click the “OK” button. However, if the document is quite large, e.g. the Index of Names, then you can restrict the number of pages printed by entering the page numbers that interest you into the Page Range section of the Print dialogue box.
